Cold hands at your desk: why it happens and what actually works
You can have cold hands in a 19-degree room. It's not in your head: eight hours of sitting still reduce circulation to the extremities, and the keyboard doesn't help. Here's the mechanics of the problem, and the solutions ranked by real effectiveness.
Why hands freeze at the keyboard
Sitting still, the body reduces peripheral circulation β the same mechanism that freezes your feet at the cinema. Hands resting on a desk add two aggravators: permanent contact with a cold surface that pumps heat away, and a raised position that doesn't help venous return.
The direct consequence: heating the whole room is the most expensive answer to the most localised problem in the house. Contact warmth, by contrast, acts exactly where the cold sets in.
The heated desk mat: the contact solution
